2025 Outdoor Track & Field Coverage Kicks Off With Top-Ten Area Performance Lists

The weather may not have received the memo, but spring has arrived, and track and field competitions have begun around the Blue Water Area. Most teams in our area have their first meets coming up this week, but with some marks already recorded, the Top-10 Performance list has kicked off once again. While many top marks on the list currently stand from an indoor invitational at SVSU in March, that meet offered a significant advantage since the weather conditions play a large role in early spring meets (wind, rain, temperatures), and therefore was not used in this results recap. Here’s a quick look at several noteworthy performances that were from outdoor competitions over the last few weeks.

BOYS

Almont had their season opener before their spring break at the Lapeer Scrimmage on March 26. Senior Chase Battani won two events: the 100-meter dash (11.69) and the pole vault (12-6), and currently sits at number one on the area’s top-10 performance list for the sprint event and second for his jump. Teammate Brody Corneau tops the list for the 110-meter hurdles, winning in 17.16.

Marysville had a chance to bust the rust out on their home turf at the Blue White Scrimmage on April 3. Liam Kimmel had a near-PR in the discus with a toss of 104-10, far enough to set the number one mark for the first season performance list. The Vikings’ 4x100 relay is the fastest in the Blue Water Area this week, with Owen Krantz, Hunter Likins, Kaleb Beltramo, and Jack Justin running 47.86.

Macomb Lutheran North divided and conquered April 5, taking on both the Spring Classic Invite for freshmen/sophomores, as well as the Dearborn Divine Child Early Season All-Comers Meet.

The all-senior 4x200 relay of Jack May, Marino Martoni, Clay Thompson, and Isaac Miller placed fifth in 1:37.01, which tops the Blue Water Area performance list so far. The 4x800 relay of Vasilios Kirchhoff, Grant Garner, Jack McMahon, and Xavier Roman also recorded a current area-best 8:51 to take the win. The 4x400 meter relay took third at the Spring Classic in 3:55 (Nino Biondo, Elijah Tyll, Frank Ferretti, and Joseph Avolio) and is also resting at the top of the performance list. Greg Glaser sits at third with a 5-8 high jump.

Joshua Macri (MLN) won the 1600 and has the current fastest time in the area by 22 seconds in 4:41.20 and also won the 800 in 2:04. He battled with Anchor Bay’s Greg Vogt in the 3200, with Vogt ultimately taking the win and setting a meet record in 10:05. Vogt leads the area time-wise in the event. Charles Bates (11.93PR/MLN), Eddie Lamb (11.95PR/Anchor Bay), and Jack May (11.97/MLN) earned a sub-12 spot on the list for their 100-meter dash times.

Hunter Phillips of Algonac leads the area in the long jump with his win at home in 19' 7.5" (PR) at the Muskrats’ non-league open invite. He didn’t compete last year but is already opening with a huge personal best close to the mark needed to qualify for D3 states, so he’s an athlete to keep an eye on.

GIRLS

Lola Battaglia of Almont added her name to several events on the area’s performance list with her finishes at the early-season Lapeer Scrimmage meet. She was first in the 100 in 13.98 and fifth in the 200 (28.24). Liana Martoni of MLN tops the area list at 13.47 PR, while Saniah Tresick of Anchor Bay sits in second at 13.58 PR, both of which were run at the Spring Classic Invite. Alexa Gardner of Algonac has the current 200-best at 27.74 set at her home track on April 3. Iyanna Brown of Anchor Bay ran a 65.9 in the 400, putting her fourth on the performance list. The Lapeer Scrimmage also put two Almont Raiders one-two on the pole vault performance list, with Lilylynn Martin and Madison Niedermaier both vaulting 7' 6”.

Samantha Whitlam of MLN opened her season with a double-win at the Spring Classic at Macomb Dakota High School: 2:35 in the 800 and 15-3.5 in the long jump. She also dipped her toes in an uncommon high school event: the 3000-meter steeplechase. Whitlam has currently posted the area’s fastest 800 time. Kate Bennett has the second-fastest time in 2:38, which she ran with a win at the Muskrats’ home invite. She also won the 1600 in 5:52, posting the area’s fastest time in that event, closely followed by ninth-grader Cassidy Bowers of Austin Catholic in 6:02; Bowers also has a 2:41 800 time, so keep an eye on this fast freshman.

Other notable placements making the performance list:

#3 3200: Avery Stallmann ran 13:19 for Macomb Lutheran North at the Spring Classic.

#1 100 Meter Hurdles: Autumn Pratt, 18.47 (MLN) at the Early Season All-Comers Meet.

#1 300 Meter Hurdles: Riyon Williams 56.74 (New Haven)@ Algonac.

#1 Discus: Nicole Hudson 85 -11" PR (Marysville) at the Allen Park CoEd Relays.
