BWAC/MAC Matchup Meet Report for April 23-24

Yale's Dykstra and Armada's Sniesak go Four-for-Four in BWAC events.


MAC Bronze: New Haven & Eastpointe @ Hazel Park 4/22/24


Senior Christian Lacy had a solid day for New Haven, winning the 100 and 200-meter dash in 11.41 and 23.97, personal bests in both for Lacy.  He also joined the 4x100-meter relay team of Owen Hulcy, Ashton Ludy, and Angelo Licari to take third in 51.66.  Maxwell Durham ran personal bests to win the 1600 (5:41) and 3200 (12:09), along with helping the 4x800-meter relay take first place.  Freshman Emma Reimer scored points for the Lady Rockets, winning the 800 (2:45 PR) and 1600 (6:31).  


BWAC: North Branch & Cros-Lex @ North Branch High School 4/23/24


Girls: Croswell-Lexington 77/North Branch 60

Michael Gorman (12.0) snagged the 100-meter win over Ethan Dinanath (12.07) for the North Branch Broncos, but Dinanath had a perfect meet after that: first place in the 200 (24.9), 400 (54.18), and the 4x400-meter relay with Bryce Barkowska, Thomas Kann, and Caiden Sherrieb (3:48).  Gorman was also victorious in the 4x100 (46.59) and 4x200 (1:36.80) relays along with Barkowska, who was fourth in the 200 (25.57) and third in the 400 (54.7 PR).  Kann won the 800 in 2:15.  


For Cros-Lex, Tye Kirschner was second in the 200 (25.15) and swept both hurdle events, with 17.25 for the 110-highs and a personal best in the 300-hurdles in 43.59, moving him onto the Blue Water Area’s Top-10 performance list. Eli Bickel took the shot put/discus events in 45-10 and 124-09.  


On the girls’ side of the competition, Grace Clemens won the sprint double: she clocked a 13.28 for the 100 and a 26.95 for the 200.  She was part of the victorious 4x200-meter relay with Lily Hurd, Sarah Munro, and Rowan Conley in 1:57.24.  Conley, Hurd, and Munro also joined Katie Gill on the first-place 4x100 relay. Clara Gyomory sealed a hurdle sweep with 17.39 in the 100 hurdles and 52.20 in the 300 hurdles to move up the Top-10 list and set a personal best.


 Cros-Lex’s Eva Thompson and Morgan Newton swapped first and second in the 800 and 1600-meter races, with Newton winning the 800 in 2:36.19 to Thompson’s 2:36.68, then Thompson winning the 1600 in 5:32 to Newton’s 5:51.  Brynn Hurley was third in the 1600 and won the 3200 in 12:57. She joined Newton, Thompson, and Abagayle Barkley in the winning 4x800 (11:40).  Ava Oleski was second in the 200 (29.19), part of the winning 4x400 in 3:51, and won high jump in 5’.

Yale’s Sadie Dykstra remained undefeated in BWAC competition as she went four-for-four in her events for the third straight conference matchup.  She won the 100-meter hurdles (16.39), the 300-meter hurdles (49.46), the long jump (17-0), and the 4x400-meter relay in 4:22.48.  The relay leg from Dykstra, who has a season-best open 400 of 61 seconds, catapulted the Bulldogs to the top of the Top-Ten list by over four seconds in that event: Keirra Taube, Julia Ferguson, and Madeline Sepsey were the other three contributors.  Taube won the high jump 5-02 and is also undefeated in BWAC competition.  She ran her personal best in a very close second to Dykstra in the 100-meter hurdles (16.69) and did the same in the 300 hurdles (49.56).  Sepsey was third in both hurdle events and also pitched in on the winning 4x200 with Ferguson and Sophie Mongelli in 1:58.92; Ferguson was second in the 200 as well (29.93).  


Imlay City’s freshman Penelope McNutt was victorious in the sprints, winning the 100 (13.93) and 200 (28.77).  Charlotte O’Brien cleaned up the distance events with first in the 800 (2:45) and 1600 (6:11).  Almont’s Laila Evola was second in both.  Madison Niedermaier won the pole vault in eight feet and was runner-up in the long jump in 14-2.5 for the Raiders.


Familiar names reappeared at the top of the results in the boys’ Blue Water Area Conference competition. Chase Battani and Matthew Bacholzky kept earning first-place points for Almont, with Battani winning the 100 (11.71), the 110-meter hurdles (16.14), and pole vault (14’), while Bacholzky won the 400 (54.5).  Ty Laforest of Yale was third in the 100 (12.4), won the 200 (25.59), and was second in the high jump (5-04) and long jump in 19-01.5 (Bacholzky was third in 19-00.5).  Brett Bearss snagged the 300-meter hurdle victory for Yale in 42.97.  Zack Haywood threw his best yet in the shot put in 42-06.5, moving him to number four on the area Top-Ten list.  He also won the discus in 130’.


BWAC distance events are usually ruled by the Bulldogs and Tuesday was no exception: Giovanni Pardo-Keegan won the 800 and 1600-meter runs in 2:06 and 4:35 for Yale, with Blake Ferguson and Wyatt Murtos trading second and third places in both.  Ferguson ran 2:09/4:44 and Murtos ran his 800-meter personal best of 2:07 and then 4:56 in the 1600.  Acer Campbell won the 3200 in a PR of 10:42.  Imlay City’s Elliot Whitney was runner-up in 11:12.  Murtos, Ferguson, Pardo-Keegan, and Campbell easily claimed the 4x800-meter relay win in 9:29.

Claire Sniesak of Armada ran her way to her first four-for-four meet, winning the 100 (13.4 PR) and 200-meter dash (28.84 PR), then winning both sprint relays in the 4x100 (56.74) and 4x200 (2:01.4).  Freshman Christina Semian was a close second in the open 100/200-meter dashes in 13.5 and 28.8, which were both personal bests for her.  Semian ran another best in the 400-meter dash in 67.5 to win the event.  Kelsey Ettel won the long jump (13’9) and the 300-meter hurdles (58.2 PR).  


Richmond’s Brianna Albers won both the 800 (2:50) and the 3200 (13:33), then joined the winning 4x400 with Lucy Kuchenmeister, Brianna Pauley, and Pauline Chapman, who was the mile winner (6:29). Pauley was second in the high jump (4-7) to Armada’s Valeria Ricossa (4-9).  Shot put and discus wins were claimed by Blue Devil Lainee Wagner, who had throws of 31-0.5 and 96-2’. 


Algonac’s Jasmine Walker was second to Albers in the 3200 in 13:37, her best career run in this event, as was Muskrat Kate Bennett in the 800 (2:53).  Evelyn Osterbeck won the 110-meter hurdles for the Muskrats in 21.2.   


Joseph Pacitto won the 100-meter dash for Richmond in 11.6 - a personal best - and then repeated the effort in 23.5 for the 200.  Anthony Alvarez was third in the 200 for Armada and won the 400-meter dash in 56.2, his personal best thus far.  He helped the 4x100 and 4x200 relays claim victories, as well.   David Clemons of Algonac was second in the 200 in 23.6 (PR). Clemons also won the 1600 (5:21 PR) and was second in the 110 hurdles (17.5 PR).  Clemons and Owen Beindit were part of the winning 4x800 (10:11) and Beindit took runner-up in the 1600 (5:24).  Nathan Clemons won the 800 for the Muskrats (2:32) and was second to Preston Corneillie (11:59 PR/Richmond) in the 3200 in a time of 12:29. Another Richmond winner was Jacob Pacitto in the 110-meter hurdles (17.1 PR) and the 300-meter hurdles (50.0 PR).  Freshman Colin Maitland won the high jump for the Armada Tigers in 5-4.


MAC RED: Romeo @ Anchor Bay HS 4/23/24

“Contributions came from everywhere as the Tars ran past Romeo 72-65 Tuesday. The hurdle crew led the way, sweeping the 300s and going 1-2 in the highs (Jonah Konarz won both in 16.27/43.28). Cameron Gramzow won the discus with a PR toss of 130’. Ethan Usrey scored in three field events, second in both the long and high jump and third in the pole vault. Thomas Westphal won the 1600 and 800-meter runs (4:34/2:02), Aiden Champagne won the 200 (24.47) and was runner-up in the 400 (53.46), and was part of a key win in the 800-meter relay. He teamed up with double hurdle winner Jonah Konarz, Kacy Agyeman, and Gerry Hanson, who won the 100 meters as well. Zach Rubicz (10:35.61) pulled out the final win of the day in a close race with teammate Greg Vogt (10:35.89) in the 3200-meter run - this puts Rubicz on the Top-10 list. The Tars are 3-1 and in first in the MAC Red heading into next Tuesday’s final dual meet vs. Grosse Pointe South.”


On the ladies’ side, Heaven Mitchell-Parker won the 110-meter hurdles in her best of 18.10 for the Tars.


Macomb Lutheran North @ Notre Dame Prep 4/23/24


Zachary Mylenek was victorious in the sprints, winning the 200 and 400-meter dashes in 22.77 and 50.96, respectively.  Both of these times put him in the number-one spots on the BWA Top-Ten performance list.  Isaac Miller was second in the 200 (23.72) and was part of the winning 4x200 relay - he also won the long jump in 18-8.  Freshman Joshua Macri won the 800 (2:16)  and 1600 (5:03).  Andrew Starrs won both the discus and shotput in throws of 120-7 and 46-2.  


For the Lady Mustangs, Freshman Samantha Whitlam ran onto the area's Top-Ten list in the 400 meters, winning in her high school best of 64.9 seconds.  She was also the long jump winner (14-4 PR). Another ninth-grader took the 1600 victory: Avery Stallmann had a best in the four-lap race of 6:10.  Paige Vogan and Maria Fortuna traded first and second in the throws, with Vogan winning the shot put in 29-11 and Fortuna winning discus in 74-7.  Autumn Pratt won both hurdles events: 18.58 for the 100s and 59.36 for the 300s.  


Port Huron High, Marysville, and St. Clair had MAC match-ups scheduled on Wednesday as well, but no results were yet posted at the time of this article.
