Friday Night Lights Shine On Great Weekend Performances

Updated: May 13

Davison Twilight Invitational: 5/10/24

As darkness descended across the track at the aptly named Davison Twilight Invitational, the sun also set on the meet and facility records in the 3200-meter run.  Anchor Bay’s Thomas Westphal obliterated the competition in his first race at the distance this season, running 8:55.11 while lapping almost the entire field.  The previous meet record was 9:29.74 set in 2017 and the Cardinal Stadium record was 9:13.48, just set last spring.  Westphal recorded new marks for both (along with resetting his own school record) and running the fastest 3200-meter time currently in the state.

“I think I’m in 8:40/8:45 shape with competition,” Westphal commented, “since I ran this all alone and the last time I ran this fast of a time I had really good competition (last May at the Shepherd Blue Jay Invitational)”.  It’s worth noting that Westphal ran his final lap in 61 seconds in lane two while dodging the majority of the other runners.

Chase Battani won the small-school 100-meter dash (11.45), was third in the 110-hurdles (16.34), and won the pole vault in 13 feet, which tied the winner in every division.  Matthew Bacholzky won the long jump for the Raiders in 19-5.5. Liam McIntyre was fourth in the high jump in 5-6 for the Broncos while Eli Bickel was fourth in discus in 145-04.  He was third in shot put in 45 feet.

Almont’s 4x400 relay of Cole Walton, Nolan Maxlow, Bacholzky, and Adam SaintOnge ran 3:42.44 to close out the meet with a second-place finish.  Brody Corneau, Walton, Maxlow, and Bacholzky won the 4x200 in 1:36.45.  Corneau was third in the 300 hurdles in 48.93.  Bacholzky and Maxlow went 1-2 in the open 400, running 52.97 and 54.68.  51.58 got Ethan Dinanath of North Branch third in the medium division.  Dryden’s Aiden Fitchett ran a 4:41.26 (PR) in the 1600 and a 2:07 (PR) to take fourth in the 800.
