With close to 80 teams and five varsity races by division, the competition at Gabriel Richard features some of the best runners from around the state. Marine City Cardinal Mooney competed in the small schools division and took second as a team, with Tyler Lenn finishing as runner-up in 17:09. Isaac Zammit was seventh in 17:55, Max Procissi 22nd in 19:00, and Evan Jacobs 30th in 19:19 to round out five medalists for the Cardinals. John Bailey (78th; 21:35) and Conor Guyor (88th; 22:17) completed the scoring for Cardinal Mooney’s top seven.

Dave Patterson Invite

Mayville High School

The Yale girls eeked out a win over Ubly at the Dave Patterson Invite by the slimmest of margins: the score was tied at 31 points for both teams, so the sixth runner determined the tiebreaker. That wasn’t a problem, as the Lady Bulldogs put their sixth, seventh, and eighth runners in front of Ubly’s sixth finisher. “It was a great feeling to get first place yesterday in Mayville,” coach Erin Kovach confirmed. “The course was muddy and slick - it was true cross country. Our times were not great but we placed well. We’re looking forward to competing these last few weeks.”

Lillian Bender led Yale with a sixth-place finish in 23:02. Her teammates Ava Childers (seventh; 23:51) and Isabelle Goulding (eighth; 23:54) also made the top ten. Brooklyn Shutko (12th) ran 24:31 and Micayla McClelland (13th) ran 24:50. Sophie Mongelli (18th), Lydia Hallay (19th), and Pedame Wadsworth (21st) convincingly broke the tie by finishing before Ubly’s sixth runner.

The Yale boys finished second as a team with a low 45-second spread between runners, which is always impressive, but even more so when considering this race was run mostly by their JV squad. Nolan Korolden (eighth; 18:52) and Logan Rhodes (10th; 19:02) were both in the top ten. The rest of the Bulldogs’ top five are as follows:

11: Lucas Peltier, 19:07

15: Braden Carless, 19:19

20: Jack Nicol, 19:37.

Freeland Falcon Invitational

Freeland High School

St. Clair ran at the Freeland High School Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, taking fourth in the girls’ race and sixth in the boys’. Lilyana Bratt paced the Lady Saints with a 15th-place finish, earning a medal in the top 25. Freshman Gabriella Komarowski placed 17th and also snagged a medal while running her personal best time in 21:09, as did Allie Komarowski (19th; 21:28) and Ella Thornton (22nd; 21:35). Aubrey Sargent (34th; 22:31) and Clair Bacon (39th; 22:53) rounded out the top seven girls, with a low team spread of 1:05.

In the boys’ race, Dylan Distelrath earned a top-ten t-shirt and a medal, taking eighth in 17:15. Ethan Kreger and Jerry Westrick finished neck-and-neck for medals at 17:46, taking 21st and 22nd, respectively. The rest of the Saints’ scoring five were Dylan Schumann (29th; 18:02) and Brayden Prieskhorn (33rd; 18:13).
