Indoor Track and Field Results Roundup Feb. 9-10, 2024

With two weeks to go until the Michigan Indoor Track State Finals and collegiate conference and national meet competitions looming, there were personal records recorded across a variety of events for many local athletes.  


HIGH SCHOOL RESULTS

13th Annual SVSU MITS Distance Fest

Sat. Feb. 10


Thomas Westphal of Anchor Bay made his indoor track season debut convincingly at the SVSU MITS Distance Fest, winning both the mile (4:17.32) and 3200-meter run (9:26.5).  These times put him on the top of the state indoor performance lists.


Boys’ Mile:

  • Aiden Fitchett (Dryden): 50th in 4:48.  PR.

  • Gunnar Wessel (MACH): 86th in 5:03.  PR.

  • Carson Prone (PHN): 92nd in 5:06.  PR.

  • Lawson Willis (AB): 128th in 5:31. PR.


Girls’ Mile:

  • Faith Wessel (MACH): 77th in 6:02.  PR.

  • Ava Johnson (Macomb Lutheran North): 80th in 6:04.  PR.

  • Madison Leslie (Anchor Bay): 95th in 6:17.  PR.

  • Caila Fitchett (Dryden): 115th in 7:10.  PR.

Boys’ 3200:

  • Brewer Snay (Macomb Lutheran North): 12th in 9:43.  PR.

LAB Indoor Meet #8

Sat. Feb. 10


  • Isaac Zammit (MC Cardinal Mooney): 15th in boys’ 800 in 2:06.82.  PR.

    • 6th place in 1600; 4:34. PR.

  • Isaiah Lopez (PHN): fourth in boys’ high jump in 5’-6”.  

  • Zhenya Knowlin (AB): 82nd in girls’ 200 (31.07) and 87th in 400 (1:16).  16th in long jump in 12’-4”. 

  • Kennedy Kiel (Macomb LN): 70th in girls’ 400 (1:10).



Aquinas MITS Meet #4

Girls’ 60-meter hurdles:

  • Grace Woodall (8th grader-Brown City): sixth in 11.81.

  • Bella Wetter (Capac): seventh in 12.04.




COLLEGIATE RESULTS


Oakland University’s Hannah Fisher (Marysville) dipped under the five-minute mark in the women’s mile this weekend at Grand Valley State University, running 4:58.75 - her personal best - to take seventh place.  Devin Johnston of Eastern Illinois (Almont) was 48th in the 60-meter dash (8.03) and 17th in the 200-meter dash (26.01), which were both season records for her.  Another notable performance at the meet on the men’s side was Noah Verlinde of SVSU (Armada), who finished seventh in the men’s 5000 meters (14:41).


Fisher’s former Viking teammate Reese Powers (MSU) placed 22nd in the women’s 800-meter dash at the Wisconsin Windy City Invitational outside of Chicago, running a time of 2:16.48. 


The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) held its indoor track and field championship meet this weekend at Cedarville University.  Concordia University’s Jayde Ullenbruch (Port Huron Northern) finished fourth overall in the pentathlon, scoring 2504 points.  During the pentathlon events, she finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (11.16), third in the high jump (4’-9.5”) and long jump (15’-10.25”), fourth in the shot put (28’-3.75”) and the 800-meter dash (2:50).  Ullenbruch also finished 12th overall in the open long jump with a distance of 15’-6.25” and teamed up for 12th in the 4x400 relay in 4:40.  Her teammate Maya Freeman, a PHN grad as well, was 11th in the shot put (37’-0.5”) and 18th in the weight throw (41’-9.75”). 


University of Detroit-Mercy's Michael Ferguson (Yale) finished 31st in the 300-meter dash (37.75) and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:36.23) at the Windsor Challenge in Ontario. His teammate Gabriela Gashaj (MC Cardinal Mooney) was 31st in the 60-meter hurdle prelims (8.21).


*High school athletes must compete for a club or run unattached and school names aren’t allowed in meet competitions or listed in any results: therefore, it can be hard to catch everyone, so if we missed your performance, please let us know so we can add it to our report.
