Macomb Athletic Club for Homeschoolers had a great showing at the Oakland County Schools Small School Invite.  Brothers Ian (17:24) and Garrett Potts (18:01) were at the front of the pack, taking fourth and sixth, respectively.   Nico DiPonio was Austin Catholic’s top finisher, taking 23rd in 19:19.

MACH once again took top honors in the girls’ race, with freshman Alannah Wessel winning in 19:35, 45 seconds over the next competitor.  She still leads all Blue Water Area girls for the fastest 5K time. Her sister Faith was fourth in 21:09, a season-best, helping MACH take fourth as a team.  Freshman Cassidy Bowers of Austin Catholic was eighth in 21:55.

Greg Vogt of Anchor Bay and Brayden Prieskorn of St. Clair were the Blue Water Area’s top finishers at Wednesday’s MAC Red Jamboree, the first of the season.  Vogt finished 16th in 17:36 and Prieskorn right behind in 17th with a time of 17:40.  Aaron Osterman was 20th for the Tars (17:46) and Ethan Kreger 26th for the Saints (18:19) as the number-two runners for each team.

In the girls’ race, it was all Romeo, who earned a perfect score of 15, taking the first five spots in 19:20 or under.  To put this accomplishment into context, that kind of running would beat many boys’ teams in the area - and it’s only early September.  The St. Clair pack was back, with Ella Thornton in 29th (22:04), Allie Komarowski in 32nd (22:21), Molly McNabb in 33rd (22:31), Gabriella Komarowski in 34th (22:37), and Eden Brewer in 36th (22:43).  Mary Wright led the Anchor Bay Tars with a 40th-place finish in 23:04.

9/6/24

The Muskrat Classic was held at Columbus Park, giving local teams another chance to race the BWAC and Region 17 D2/Region 26 D3 regional course.  Many Blue Water Area athletes were competing in both the D1 and D2/3/4 divisions.  Race starts were staggered five to ten minutes apart, which made for an interesting chase dynamic between various divisions.

D1 BOYS

The Division 1 boys' race kicked off the afternoon for the Muskrat Classic.  Greg Vogt was the Blue Water Area’s top finisher, placing sixth in his season-best of 16:55 and moving into the #2 spot on the Blue Water Area top times performance list.  Teammates Aaron Ostermann (16th; 17:26) and Brandon Ziehmer (27th;18:27) also earned medals and ran season-best times, earning the team a seventh-place finish overall.   For Port Huron Northern, Carson Prone (20th; 17:43), Oliver Howie (21st; 17:44), and Grant Davis (25th; 18:08) were medal winners: the Huskies were 11th as a team.  John Goodwin was the top finisher for Port Huron High, taking 73rd in his personal best of 21:08.

Joshua Macri of Macomb Lutheran North (R).

Approximately 20 of the top runners in the boys’ D2/3/4 race took a wrong turn and needed to be redirected, so review these times with about a minute-plus or so of leniency.

Joshua Macri of Macomb Lutheran North added another win to his season, taking first in 17:44.  He has finished no lower than second place in his season thus far, leading all Blue Water Area times.  Dropping almost two full minutes, Connor Peppin of Cros-Lex had a huge personal best to snag runner-up honors in 18:00.  Macri’s teammates Xavier Roman and Samuel Kochensparger were third and fourth (18:06/18:09), but it wasn’t enough to overcome Nolan Korolden (Yale) taking fifth in 18:08 and the self-named “three-headed dragon” of Yale’s senior pack; Wyatt Murtos was sixth (18:09 SR), Kale Kovach was seventh (18:09) and Teddy Rutkofske was ninth in 18:14.  Ethan Kreger of St. Clair was eighth (18:13) to break up the Bulldogs.  Yale won the meet with 39 to MLN’s 52 and their entire top seven earned medals, as did Macomb Lutheran North’s.  St. Clair was third in 87 but had just come off less than 48 hours of rest after a Wednesday MAC Red Jamboree. Richmond freshman Mason Pietyrkowski led the Blue Devils with a 13th place finish in 18:23. Evan Jacobs led Cardinal Mooney in 11th (18:20 PR), Julian Walker was 18th in 18:29 for Algonac, Brendan Koza was 23rd for Marysville (18:44 PR), while Kai Fisher was 24th in 19:01 for Memphis.  Ryan Jackins was 30th in 19:15 for Marine City, his best yet this fall, while James Nelson did the same for Kimball New Life Christian in 20:23, placing 46th.  In 84th was Nathan Kirby for Landmark Academy (28:12 SR).  With a large amount of Blue Water Area athletes in the top 40, check out the full results to see all medalists.

Samantha Langolf (R) of PHN.

D1 GIRLS

In a battle to the finish line with Grosse Point South’s Chloe Caulfield, Port Huron Northern’s Samantha Langolf took second in 20:27, her personal best, moving her from ninth to third on the Blue Water Area top times performance list.  All of the Huskies’ team medaled: Haley Sharp in 13th (22:17 SR), Isabella Nestle in 20th (22:41 SR), Miley Caughel in 21st (22:45 SR), Riley Owen in 31st (23:22 PR), Cassie Gibson in 32nd (23:22 PR), and Brooklyn Schott in 33rd (23:34), finishing fourth as a team.  Mary Wright of Anchor Bay led the Tars, taking 19th in 22:32, a PR for her as well. Teammate Tenaya Jendza snagged the last medal, taking 40th in 24:11.

D2/3/4 GIRLS

  5. Marysville 129

  6. Yale 134

Eva Thompson of Cros-Lex.

Once again, it was Cros-Lex’s Eva Thompson up front, but this time it wasn’t as easy to differentiate her dominant win, as she caught up to half the D1 race field that started five minutes before she did.  Thompson won in 19:23 and perhaps finally having someone to chase was helpful since she ran her season-best.  Fellow Pioneer Brynn Hurley was third in 20:57 with Algonac’s Kate Bennett right on her heels in fourth (20:59 PR), which may prove indicative of the first BWAC Jamboree on this course on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Macomb Lutheran North took the win as a team, led by runner-up Samantha Whitlam, who was second in 20:40, and teammate Lucy Gump eighth in 21:30 (PR).  As predicted, pack running is driving the Mustangs to victory, but the same is true for the St. Clair girls, who share several commonalities with MLN: a young squad and a very low team spread.  Ella Thornton was ninth for the Saints (21:32), Gabriella Komarowski 10th (21:37 SR), Allie Komarowski 11th (21:40 SR), Molly McNabb 15th (21:51), and Eden Brewer 26th (22:40 PR).  Compare that to Macomb Lutheran North’s 12th place (Avery Stallmann; 21:44 PR), 13th (Evelyn Buckley; 21:47), and 17th (Isabella LaPerriere; 22:00).  MLN’s top six all ran season or personal bests, while St. Clair had three runners in the top five do the same, and there are only two seniors for the Saints and none for Macomb Lutheran North.  The team spreads are 1:08 (St. Clair) to 1:19 (MLN). Every time these teams match up, it's an interesting preview of the showdown sure to come at regionals.

Sage Cole of Yale was fifth in 21:01 - her best yet. Lillian Rutallie led Marysville in 14th (21:50 SR) and a nice Viking pack was right behind: Addison Stevens (18th; 22:07 SR) and Joselyn Chapman (22:09 PR).  Julia Rogers of New Life Christian (16th; 21:53), Pauline Chapman of Richmond (23rd; 22:25), and Aubrey Pilon of Marine City (29th; 22:51) led their teams and earned medals.  Taking 41st and just missing a medal was Livia Kuecken of Blue Water Christian Academy, who ran a 24:17 PR.  Other runners leading their respective teams: in 44th was Avalee Pomper of Memphis (24:30 PR), in 60th was Isabella Sparling of Cardinal Mooney (26:03), 66th was Kiersten Zeller of Kimball New Life Christian (27:09 PR), and 80th was Lucilia Cordle of Kimball Landmark (30:37 SR).  As mentioned previously, there were many local medalists from the Blue Water Area in the top 40, so take a look at the full meet results.

Freshman Levi Fitchett led Dryden on Saturday at the Bath Invitational in the D3 race division, taking 19th in his personal best of 18:26.  Teammate Logan Romain medaled by placing 25th in 18:50.  The Dryden boys finished fifth as a team.  On the girls’ side, medalists included Cara Prusakiewicz (10th; 21:38 SR) and Claire Wright (17th; 23:01 PR).  The girls finished seventh overall.

Cooper Hoyt led the North Branch Broncos at the Hatchet Invitational to place 29th in 20:10,  just missing the top 25 medal spots.  Liam Bhatti was 50th as the top finisher for Imlay City in 21:23.  North Branch's Rowan Conley was the lone area medalist, taking 18th in the girls’ race in 23:20.  Leading the IC Spartans was Kendal Donahue, placing 27th in 24:17.
