Port Huron Northern’s Lopez Leads Local Efforts in First Indoor Opener

Local athletes stepped back into track and field action as the first full weekend of indoor meets kicked off around the state.  Between the Lincoln Athletic Building in Ypsilanti, Saginaw Valley State University, and Grand Valley State University, here’s a round-up of Blue Water Area results from this past weekend.

LAB Track Club Meet #1

Port Huron Northern’s Isaiah Lopez cleared six feet in his first high jump attempt of the indoor season, taking third place with a personal record that equals his best jump at the end of this past spring’s outdoor season.  He also placed fifteenth in the long jump (17’ 8.75”) and 70th in the 60-meter dash (7.78).  


New Baltimore Anchor Bay’s Alysia Goudelock and Aiden Champagne competed for the 16 Ways Track Club out of Macomb.  Goudelock won the girls’ high jump (5’) and was tenth in the long jump (14’ 4.25").  She also placed 64th in the 60-meter dash (9.07).  Champagne was part of the boys’ fourth-place 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:35, and also 11th in the 300-meter dash (37 seconds).  




SVSU MITS Meet #1  

North Branch’s Wyatt Opperman was 28th in the 800-meter dash (2:27) and 32nd in the 1600 (5:22).  Freshman Levi Opperman was fifth in the pole vault at 11’ 6.4” and 21st in the 60-meter hurdles (11.64).  Chase Battani of Almont won the pole vault at a height of 14 feet.  


Aiden Fitchett, Caila Fitchett, and Cara Prusakiewicz all competed at SVSU for the Dryden Cardinals.  Aiden was fifth in the 800-meter dash and the mile, running 2:09 and 4:46, respectively, both personal indoor bests and close to his outdoor season records.  Caila was 31st in the 60-meter dash (8.84), 40th in the 400 (1:10), and 33rd in the 800 (3:02), events she is trying for the first time indoors.  Prusakiewicz also ran her personal record in the 800 (2:54) and close to her best in the 1600 (6:28).



GVSU Holiday Open

Collegiate indoor track action was underway in Grand Rapids at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open on Friday, Dec. 8.  As a basketball athlete during the winter months, Spring Arbor University runner Camden Khon (Armada) had never competed in an indoor track meet until Friday.  He was the top freshman in the 800-meter run, finishing 15th overall in 1:57, the current indoor leading time for the Crossroads League (NAIA).  He also placed 14th in the mile in 4:24.
