Regular League Competition Wraps Up as Athletes Look Toward Championship Meets

Updated: May 6

Battani, Clemens, Dykstra, McNutt, O'Brien, and Reynolds Go Four-for-Four.

This week wrapped up the regular season league competition for the BWAC and the MAC, along with most of the North Central Thumb League (which includes Capac, Memphis, and Dryden).  Conference Championships take place over the next few weeks for local teams and then the focus narrows to county and regional competition and state qualifications.

Almont and Armada at North Branch

The 100-meter dash decided who would be four-for-four in this BWAC matchup between Almont’s Chase Battani and Ethan Dinanath of North Branch, and the margin between first and second was .02 of a second.  Battani ultimately pulled off the win with 11.62 to Dinanath’s 11.64.  Battani went on to win the 110-meter hurdles (16.84), the 300-meter hurdles (45.14), and the pole vault (13’).  Dinanath won the 200 (24.12), 400 (53.46), and was part of the winning 4x400-meter relay in 3:39.75, along with Bryce Barkowska, Valentino Castaneda, and Thomas Kann.  Kann had a triple win with the 800 (2:17) and 1600 (5:00) added to this relay victory.  Micheal Gorman was third in the 100 and first in both sprint relays.  Barkowska had a busy day, joining the 4x200 and placing second in the 400.  Liam McIntyre was second in the 200 and won the high jump in 5-8: he’s just a freshman.  Another ninth grader from Armada tied the height for second: Colin Maitland jumped his personal best of 5-8, as well.  Eli Bickel easily won both shot put and discus, throwing 41-2 and 149 (a PR). Colton Grzyb of Almont was fourth in the 800, second in the 1600 (5:20), and ran on the winning 4x800 relay (9:41).

A four-for-four athlete on the girls’ side of the meet won’t surprise anyone: Grace Clemens of North Branch also remains undefeated in all her events in the BWAC.  She won the 100 (12.92), 200 (26.79), 400 (61.78), and long jump (16-09).  Clara Gyomory swept the hurdle events for the Broncos, running 16.94 in the 100-meter hurdles and 53.90 in the 300-meter hurdles: she joined the track team as a senior this year and is less than a second behind area-leading and All-State Yale hurdler Dykstra, which is impressive for her first season of competition.  Gyomory was also third in the high jump in 4-4.

Laila Evola of Almont won the 1600/3200 in 6:04 and 13:37, while also chipping in on the 4x800 relay.  Her teammate Madison Niedermaier vaulted her personal best with a pole vault win in 8-06.  She was also second in the long jump in 15-00.5.  The Raiders’ Isabella Irwin won the high jump (4-8).

Armada's Khon, Sniesak, and Mackenzie.

Armada took almost the entire top-ten places in the 800 meters, going 1-9, with Brooklyn Khon winning in 2:33, followed by Claire Sniesak in her first 800 attempt at 2:37.  Darrah Mackenzie rounded out the top three 800-meter spots with a 2:39. Sniesak and Khon joined Ava Baltierra and Cristina Semian to win the 4x400 in 4:25.  Freshman Riley Agee won the shot put in 29-1 for the Tigers, while North Branch claimed the discus victory with Katie Gill’s throw of 96-07.

Sadie Dykstra of Yale wrapped up another perfect four-for-four in the league: she has remained undefeated in any BWAC competition thus far.  With the conference championship coming up on May 7 on her home track, it looks probable that she will maintain her perfect record.  Dykstra won the 100-meter hurdles (15.98), 300-meter hurdles (47.44), the long jump (16-9) and was part of the 4x400 relay (4:18.4) with Keirra Taube, Madeline Sepsey, and Julia Ferguson. Their 4x400 now leads the Blue Water Area in this event. Taube was right behind Dykstra in both hurdle events and won the high jump in 5’.  Freshman Sepsey won the 400 in a personal best of 63.81, was second in the 200 (28.24), and was part of the winning 4x200 relay (1:55.17), just barely missing a four-for-four meet performance. Cros-Lex’s Ava Oleski won the 200 in 27.24 (a personal best) and was second in the high jump in 4-10.  Eva Thompson was a triple-distance winner for the Pioneers, taking first in the 800 (2:38), 1600 (5:53), and 3200 (11:56).

Zack Haywood of Yale was the double-throws winner, taking the shot put victory in 43-05 and discus in 136-07, both PRs.  Blake Ferguson won the 800 and 1600 for the Bulldogs in 2:06 and 4:40, respectively.  Ty Laforest was victorious with a high jump win in 5-6 and the long jump in 18-08.5.  Acer Campbell set his personal best in the 3200-meter run (10:35) and is undefeated in the BWAC in this event.

Penelope McNutt of Imlay City is the first freshman to grace the BWAC four-for-four, winning the 100, 200, 4x100, and 4x200 relays.  She set personal bests in both open sprint events, running 12.3 for the 100 and 26.70 for the 200, moving her to the top of the Blue Water Area performance list in the 100.  Charlotte O’Brien won the 800 (2:49) and 1600 (6:23) for the Spartans and ran a relay leg on the winning 4x400 and 4x800, making her four-for-four.  Laela Bhatti was on the 4x4 and took first place in the long jump in 13-08.75.  She also placed third in the 100-meter dash with her best of 13.23.  Lainee Wagner of Richmond was the double champion in the throws, winning the shot put in 33-02.5 and the discus in 104-03, personal bests in both.

The New Baltimore Anchor Bay Tars won their first MAC Red title in three years, winning every running event and four out of five field events against Grosse Pointe South.  Thomas Westphal’s name is no surprise at the top of performance lists for distance events, but he now tops the 400-meter dash performance list for the area at 51.99 after Tuesday’s met.  He also won the 800 meters in 2:07 and the 1600 in 4:37.  Jonah Konarz doubled up on hurdle wins again while setting personal bests in both: 15.24 in the 110-meters (PR) and 41.37 in the 300s, along with winning the high jump in 5-6.
