Second League Jamborees Showcase Mid-Season Standings

Updated: Oct 7, 2023

Julian Walker (Algonac) and Acer Campbell (Yale) sprint for third.

BWAC Jamboree #2

Once again, the Yale Bulldogs and Cros-Lex Pioneers claimed both the team and individual titles at the second BWAC cross country jamboree at Almont High School on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Blake Fergason finished first in the boys' race in 16:56 and Eva Thompson in 19:27 to win for the girls, albeit with varying race styles. Fergason was in third at the mile mark and steadily worked his way up to finish 13 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, while Thompson led from the gun and amassed almost a minute lead by the time she crossed the finish line.

Both winners mentioned the course was enjoyable to race. “It was actually a really nice course. The apple orchard had lots of turns, but Coach told us to surge right out of them, so we stuck to that gameplan and I think it turned out well,” Fergason said. “I liked the course,” Thompson agreed. “I felt good and it went well.”

Richmond's Brianna Albers led the Blue Devils.

The Yale boys’ team won with 19 points, 89 over the second-place team. Their top five went 1-2-4-5-7, also placing Bulldog runners in 11th-14th and 16th. Julian Walker of Algonac ran one of his best times this season to snag third in a dramatic sprint to the finish with Acer Campbell of Yale: the two were separated by a hundredth of a second. Elliot Whitney (Imlay City; 18:02), Luke Nawrocki of Armada (9th in 18:36), and Wyatt Opperman of North Branch (10th in 18:59) also finished in the top ten places.

The Cros-Lex and Armada girls had a close race for first, with the Pioneers finishing ahead by six, 30-36. The Pioneers went 1-3-4-8 and the Tigers finished 2-5-6-10. Brianna Albers of Richmond (7th in 21:53) and Charlotte O’Brien of Imlay City (9th in 22:01) were the only two runners besides a Cros-Lex or Armada girl to crack the top ten.

MAC BLUE Jamboree #2

Marysville girls win the MAC Blue Jamboree #2.

The Marysville girls maintained their first place standing within the MAC Blue, winning their second league jamboree on Tuesday at Port Huron Central Middle School. Lillian Rutallie paced the Vikings with a second-place finish in 21:48, followed by teammate Ella Deshon in fourth (23:01). “I’m very proud of how the girls’ team performed,” said coach Sarah St. Coeur. “We have some great team depth with all nine of our girls running in the top 23.”

Marine City’s girls finished second, with Casidhe Flesher finishing third in 21:59 and Emma Erdmann 10th in 24:01. “I was very happy with the team’s performance yesterday,” Mariners’ coach Angie Rossi stated. “With only five girls running, all of their times were important. All of the girls ran well but I was especially proud of Morgan Goulette (29th). She is coming off an injury and could have used a few more days before racing again, but ran so we could score as a team…she powered through and had a great race.”

On the boys’ side, Marysville placed third and Marine City fifth. Trent Glass (7th in 18:31) and Nathan VanderMeulen (8th in 18:31) had a photo-finish to lead the Vikings. Twins Alex Robertson (18:51) and Jayden Robertson (19:11) were the top two runners for Marine City with finishes of 11th and 13th, respectively. Jordan Barksdale was the first runner for Port Huron High, finishing 27th with a time of 20:31.
