Weekend Invitationals Full of Records and Personal Bests

Updated: Apr 29

There were numerous meet records, school records, and personal bests across the area as Blue Water Area athletes competed Friday and Saturday at a variety of track and field invitationals.

Barnyard Invitational and Elite Mile Showcase @ Romeo: Friday, April 26

The Barnyard Invitational had many unique features for a high school track meet: it only featured distance events (800 meters, 1500 meters/1600 meters/full mile, and 3200 meters), athletes were seeded by times into various heats including elite sections, and the meet announcer was none other than the man, the myth, the legend…Matt Armelagos of Michigan Cross Country Speed Ratings.  The Rising Stars and Elite race participants had their athlete bios and photos on the big screen as they were introduced at the starting line, which was a nice touch for the runners and spectators alike.  While every race and heat had great competition, the big news of the night was the Elite Mile race, where Seth Norder won in 4:06, which when converted to a 1600-meter race is 4:04.81, the second-fastest time in the nation and third-fastest in MHSAA history.  Anchor Bay’s Thomas Westphal was third in 4:10.64 (4:09.14 1600), resetting his school record and ranking him second in the nation right behind Norder.  Michigan State University will add these two speedsters to the Spartan roster next school year.  Cardinal Mooney’s Tyler Lenn was 20th in 4:23.21 and ranked first in Michigan’s Division 4.  Anchor Bay also had Zachary Rubicz finish in 4:33.32 (45th).  Every performance now on the updated Blue Water Area Top-10 List in the 1600-meter run was run at this meet.

In the early sessions of the 1600,  Marine City Cardinal Mooney’s Isaac Zammit was fourth in 4:30, his PR, ranking him fourth in D4 currently in this event. Yale’s Giovanni Pardo-Keegan (2nd; 4:28.98), Blake Ferguson (6th; 4:32.81), Acer Campbell (29th; 4:40.35), Wyatt Murtos (42nd; 4:45.27), and Teddy Rutkofske (74th; 4:54.66) all ran their personal bests to finish under five minutes. Dylan Distelrath of St. Clair hit his best mark in this event with a 4:36.2, finishing 14th.  Season bests were set by Anchor Bay’s Greg Vogt (33rd; 4:41.58) and Gabe Rush (53rd; 4:49.56).  Aidan Leslie of NB Anchor Bay (75th/4:54.91), Jerry Westrick of St. Clair (4:55.27/77th) and Carson Prone of Port Huron Northern did the same, finishing 79th in 4:56.26.  Gunnar Wessel of MACH was 73rd in 4:54.59, a best for him.  Ethan Kreger, a freshman from St. Clair, snagged 83rd, running his high school best in 4:57.24.  There were several more local runners in this race, so check out the full results at https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/meet/520381/results/all.

Yale Relays: Saturday, April 27

While results of the Yale Relays are atypical due to the mixed-gender Co-Ed relay teams, the meet did have some interesting highlights:

  • The throwers’ relay earned a pizza as a first-place trophy. The Armada Tigers earned the pie with Riley Agee, Emily Brown, Chase Walker, and Jacob Meerschaert running the fastest 4x100 relay amongst the shot put and discus crew.

  • The Bulldog Field Event Relay featured four represented members of various field event crews, in any combination or order they desired.

  • The cross country race was scored with four runners from each team on a grassy 3000-meter course that finished on the track.  Yale won 1st, 3rd, 11th, and 17th places by Acer Campbell, Teddy Rutkofske, Isabelle Goulding, and Micayla McClelland.

  • When you have some of the best hurdlers in the league and region, it’s no surprise Yale won the Shuttle Hurdle Relay with Keirra Taube, Sadie Dykstra, Leo Bearss, and David Bianchini winning by three seconds.  One of the best spectator moments of the meet was watching Colin Boullard of St. Clair execute phenomenal hurdling to make up a large deficit and almost catch the leaders.

  • There was a Distance Medley Relay (1200-400-800-1600): Armada took the victory but St. Clair’s Dylan Distelrath gave a valiant effort in the anchor leg to catch first place, running a fast mile less than 24 hours after running his PR at the Barnyard Invitational the night before.

Oxford Invitational: 4/27/24

Anchor Bay’s Luke Bowman won the adaptive 100, 200, 400, and shotput, making him four-for-four in his events.  He came close to his PR in the 100 in 20.17, 37.21 in the 200, 72 in the 400, and threw a huge personal best in the shot put with a toss of 19-7.75.

*Due to some missing meet information and glitches in Athletic.net, the Blue Water Area Top-10 Performance List has not been updated for this weekend's performances. It will be updated as soon as all athlete and meet information is available.
