Anchor Bay’s Thomas Westphal added his first official state title to his track resume on Sunday at the MITS Indoor State Track and Field Finals, winning the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:15.16. His teammate, Zachary Rubicz, was 39th in 4:33.  Fellow Tar Aiden Champagne also participated in the finals, running the 400-meter dash (48th; 53.67).  Macomb Lutheran North’s Brewer Snay was 25th in the 3200-meter run in 9:52.

Marysville’s Trent Glass ran as part of the 4 x 800-meter relay for Breen Track Club, claiming fourth place in 7:56.53.  He also competed in the 800-meter run and finished 40th in 2:09.  Glass commented, “The competition at the meet was amazing and that made everyone, including myself, compete at their highest level, making it a great final meet!”

Janae Hudson also brought home some podium hardware for the Marysville Vikings, taking fourth in both the girls’ shotput (41’-08”) and discus (130’-04”).  As the 2023 defending Division 2 state champion in the shot put, Hudson has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, a role she embraces by mentoring younger throwers in her club.  “I love taking the newbies under my wing,” Hudson explained.  “It was an amazing weekend for the throws I participated in.  It was neat watching all of us compete in that final throw.”  Richmond’s Lainee Wagner was 18th in the shot with a throw of 33’-02”.

Chase Battani of Almont cleared 14’-03” in the pole vault to secure second, technically reaching the same height as the winner but with more attempts to clear the bar.  Battani is no stranger to the state-meet podium, either, placing third at the D3 state finals. Anchor Bay’s Alysia Goudelock cleared her personal best of 5’-02” to take fourth in the girls’ high jump.  Isaiah Lopez of Port Huron Northern placed 15th in the boys’ high jump, clearing 5’-10” to round out Blue Water Area athletes.
