It was a familiar sight at the Caro Golf Club Saturday morning: a Yale runner led the boys' race, and a Cros-Lex runner paced the girls. Teams from around Michigan's Thumb Area came to compete in one last tune-up and the Bulldogs and Pioneers made their final statements before next weekend's regional match-ups.
Yale won the boys' race with 33 points. Cros-Lex was runner-up in the girls' race to Caro, who scored 36 to their 42 points. Yale's Giovanni Pardo-Keegan was the boys' individual winner in 16:31. Cros-Lex's Eva Thompson won the girls' race in 19:20.
"We feel really good going into regionals," said Pardo-Keegan. "I'm really excited to race and see what we can accomplish there and then at states. We're trusting the process with our coach and he's doing a great job getting us ready." With three runners taking first through third place separated by only two seconds, the Bulldogs seemed very ready: they also had their top seven runners all medal.
Cros-Lex's Morgan Newton, who finished fourth in 19:41, commented, "Saturday was perfect for one last race before the big regionals (next Friday) and the competition was great! Unfortunately, we lost to the Caro girls team but we have always been competitive with them. We will definitely be ready to show all the work we've put in this season!" Her teammate Abby Barkley (15th in 21:26) agreed: "We went out with the intention of having fun and getting it done. We did fall short of Caro, but we had great overall finishes and times. We are excited to work out this week and get ready for regionals on Friday!"
